I wonder if anyone can help? I am new affiliate marketing, blogs etc. A college I work with was telling me that a XML-Sitemap is an absolute must for a site as it most definately helps with rankings, and he has a good knowledge of web sites and the likes. Can anyone tell me if this is a must do?
Thanks
Teddy

Hi Teddy,
XML Sitemap is a method by which you can help a search engine, including Google, find & index all the pages on your site. Sometimes useful for very large sites, perhaps if the content chases often, but still not necessary if you have a good navigation system.
Make sure all your pages link to at least one other in your site
Link to your important pages often, with varying anchor text, in the navigation and in page text content
Remember Google needs links to find all the pages on your site.
Sitemaps are an easy way for webmasters to inform search engines about pages on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.
This can all be done manually also by RSS'ing your blogs and linking your sites :)

Thanks for that info. You talk about RSS'ing my blog and that is another topic I have been trying to understand. I really appreciate all the efforts and information people supply but if I ask really stupid questions or don't understand I am really sorry, but I am new to all this and am trying to get an understanding of all this. I do research but don't grasp all these new "concepts" as they are foreign to me at this stage. I am sure I will learn and appreciate everyone's help. I will look into RSS as well as it seems it is something my blog will need to help it along.
Thanks again for all the info :)
Teddy.

I am using WordPress. I believe it is good and I have gotten quite used to the way it works. I started using it a while ago when I started my first blog not knowing a thing and have contiuned to use it.

For those of you using Worpress for your blogs there is a plugin you can use to automatically build your site map. It will also submit it to Google, Bing and Ask.
The plugin is called Google XML Sitemaps.
Enjoy
