One thing that I want to add to this, although it may seem obvious, is to add relevant content to your site. If the content that you are adding does not jive with the main content title etc on your site you will get beat down in the rankings!
This happened to me a while ago when I was trying to monetize a site that was ranking for
"funniest you tube videos" I went from number one for the keyword to who knows where in a matter of a day or two; from a few hundred hits per day to a few hits per day.

So keep that content relevant!
