This is a question that I get frequently. What is anchor text and where do I put it?

Anchor Text is when you post a link to site but give it alternative text, so now you might be using the actual link or URL - the text will appear instead. This is crucial when linking to your sites.

Here is an example:

Actual Link or URL with no anchor text in it:

http://www.YourWebsiteOrBlog/ or if you have a Squidoo Lens, http://www.squidoo.com/YourLens

This is with the alternative text or the Anchor Text:

My Blog Review: How To Make A Blog

Make sure that you are using this html code in order to make this clickable:

<a href="http://squidoo.com/YourLens">How To Make A Blog</a>

The search engines (Google) will notice this and your links pointing to your sites - make sure the link and the title relate to each other. You will usually put your anchor text in the last paragraph or bio/resource box.

I hope that this will clear up some of your questions. :)

It may be a good idea for anyone who needs this information to copy it and paste it into your notes or to favorite the page. It is one of those references you go back to often. :)

no problem wity long anchor text, but is that what you really want? Consider how you want your users to find you - if the anchor text in links to your pages matches the searches users are doing, Google (http://www.botmasternet.com/) will rank your pages higher.

I cant see users doing m***ively (http://www.botmasternet.com/) long searches so just use your main keywords for anchor text. Think how you would do a search for your articles and then use that text in the link.

You want to keep your anchor link down to a minimum when using. Say 1-3 words. This gives enough for your keyword or phrase:)

Just try not to make it too long or it will defeat the purpose. :)

How important is anchor text? I have a number of site mao style search engine helper pages that I would like to work on to increase my PR.

Will adding the headline and abstract of the article in to the anchor text help my page rank, or risk it considering the length og text within the link?

Has anyone ever heard of anchor text in a link being too long for search engines to consider valid?

Anchor text is important because it will tell the search engines what the page is about. If you use it wisely it will boost your rankings in search engines expecially Google.

Most use the anchor for their keyword/phrase so they will not be longer than 2-3 words normally.

You are able to use anchor text in:

•External links - links from other sites
•Internal links - links on your pages
•Navigation maps
•Links on your main page. A very important spot.

Andrea those websites are already pre-built. You can not add anything to them. Using the anchor text will apply when you write articles, ads, blogs, lenses, etc. :)

Need more explanation please...Admin and Mod. Why does the anchor need to be shorter? A good portion of my keyword phrases are 4-5 words. Is this a mistake and if so what's all the hubbub about long tail keywords.
I know that using keywords as anchor text helps Google, so what's the benefit of using shorter keywords.
