This was first introduced to me by a fellow marketer and at first I kind of laughed at him an said... "right, I don't do that".
He said the following:
People who are putting in all of this work into creating an online business and are not seeing results may not actually be putting in all the work they say they are.
WHAT? I said... "So people are lying about how many hours they say they work"
Exactly he said, and the thing they probably don't even know it. Well he had my attention then.
Care to explain I said.
He said that people who start building an online business might have tons of discipline in some area but lack in others. One in particular is time management. He said that people may think they actually have great time management skills, but in reality they really don't.
Many people who schedule time to work on their online business may get distracted very easily. They go and check their emails every hour, check Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, HiFive, etc. Maybe the phone rings or an unexpected visitor drops by and before they know it they are involve in a 20 minute conversation and not doing what they are supposed to be doing in the first place. So after you deduct the 20 min. conversation with your unexpected visitor, the 10 min. phone conversation with your other friend, the 15 min. escapade of checking your email and social medial pages, you have actually work less than what you have already schedule yourself to.
What can you do about it? Simple... STOP IT!
Check your email 2-3 times per day max. Schedule a time to return email when it is convenient to you.
Stay away from social media as much as possible. Sure it's fun and entertaining, but unless you are using it to promote your business, than keep it to a minimal. Trust me. Keeping up with 100 of your online friends can become extremely time consuming.
Just because the phone rings it doesn't mean you have to answer it. If you are saying "what if it is an emergency", well then I'm sure that person will either keep calling you or simply leave you a message. Schedule a time every day when you can return and receive calls when it is convenient to you.
So, the last one... unexpected visitors. How do you stop that?
I personally work in my home office, but if you think this is one area that really bothers you, what can you do?
Go work at a place where you know people won't just drop by. The library, a coffee shop, the book store, a restaurant. As long as you have Internet access you can work anywhere.
After hearing this very long conversation, I actually had to admit to just about everything my friend said... "Guilty as charged". However, now I know about this and can actually prevent it from ever happening again.
