Hi Port8894,
Twitter is a great tool! It is considered a mini blogging site and what it is great for is getting traffic to your websites. There is a lot to it, you can feel free to look at my twitter link and scroll down to the bottom of the page. There are a lot of free resources that help explain what you can use the site for.
Cheers,
Frank

Jeff,
Here is a link directly to Twitter where you can read up more:
http://twitter.com/about#about
There are some members in our forum who do use it more frequently and can shed some more light on it. :)
One thing that I would say is only tweet when you have something to say. I've followed people who regularly put out 15 tweets in quick succession and it obliterates all the other tweets from other people that I'm interested in and I've blocked them as a consequence. 1 quality tweet is far more attractive than 15 "spam" tweets.
Also, keep selling to a minimum. People want to connect with who you are. Think of it as a pub conversation - no one wants to hang out with salesmen pitching at them all the time but a bit of easy going fun and observation goes a long way - as well as a quality "recommendation", be it a product or and interesting item. Constant sellers get blocked by me if they have nothing else to contribute.
Also, If you use TweetDeck, you can access MySpace and Facebook - great little app.

I've never used Twitter beacuse it always seemed a little flaky, full of people giving uninteresting details of their lives. How is it useful for doing business online?

It actually is that and so much more. LOL There are so many people making money online using Twitter as their main focus with campaigns surrounding just that platform.
Again, we have a few members who actually do this, who may want to elaborate on this topic. :)

Sorry. I just thought about the Verizon Wireless commercial with the guy sending a tweet to his son: "I'm sitting on the porch," and the son's standing right next to him.

It may seem that way Andy, but as with anything else, people do click on and read the links that others tweet and they buy into it if it is right for them. It is just another avenue to think about. :)

Well, I did sign up for Twitter, but I've been too busy to do anything with it. I like what I see so far. I hope I don't fall into the trap of using it for fun only and not for promotion.
