It will help your sales, but you really have to watch your account because it can add up fast and your budget can go quickly. Make sure you have highly targeted keywords/phrases... check your competition and make sure you can compete.

It is very important to be fully aware of this program before jumping in too fast. As it can be very profitable, you do spend quite a bit as well. Just be safe and check out the link that Forum Admin 2 has provided. :)

I am a little confused about how Google Adsense works. Google says that this is a free program. If it is free, what do you spend money on with Adsense?

Adsense is an advertiseing program of Google's. This program is completely free to use and earn money with. The Publisher's are the ones that pay you half for having it on your website, and then Google will get the other half.
Now, Google Adwords is a program that you pay for to put your own ads or products in as a Sponsored Ad or Results that you see when you look things up on Google.
Adsense is one of Google's advertising programs. Another one of Google's advertising programs is Adwords essentially is the source of the ads used for the Adsense program.
Website owners (the Publishers) sign up with Google Adsense for no cost and are able to put these ads on their websites. When an ad is clicked by a visitor of your site, Google will pay the publisher about half of what the Adwords advertiser is paying to run the ad. Google will in turn recieve the other half.
Here are links to both programs for your convenience where you can read up more on them:

I hope this helps you!

Thanks! It should help give some insight into the differences of the two. Many do get confused about their functions, so hopefully this helps. :)

OK, that clears up a lot. If you put Adsense on your website, you don't pay anything and can actually earn money. But if you want Google to put your website in Adsense so that it shows up on other websites, then you have to pay when someone clicks to your website. That makes sense.
Another question: What is a Google Slap? I have heard that term being thrown around a lot too. Everyone says you don't want to get slapped by Google.

This term is mainly used by the small businesses that have adwords accounts through Google to help in drumming up business. If Google finds that your page that customers visit is not related to your topic, has poor quality, or tends to slowly load, the action from google ends us up becoming a slap.
This in turn could cause your PPC to go up and your page rank to go down. Here is some great reading on how to recover from this if it happens to you.

Thanks for the info, Forum Admin 2. It sounds like you need to monitor things really closely if you're using Adwords so you can take action quickly if you get slapped.

That is very true. That is one reason why I also posted the link for members to see how this can be prevented by taking action to protect themselves. :)

A general question about Adsense: When is it a good idea to use it?
On the surface, it seems like since it's free and you earn money from the clicks, it's always a good idea to put it on your website. But can it also distract from the other promotions that have a higher profit potential? In other words, if someone comes to my website based on a backlink promoting a product on the website, and he or she sees a Google Adsense ad that interests them and clicks on that, sure I've earned $0.50 for the click, but I may have lost the $30 commission I would've gotten if they'd followed the link to the product instead of the Google ad.

You can decide to put it on your websites or blogs at any time, it is your own preference.
You're right though, it can take away from what they actually came there for, but it will (usually - not always) open in another window, so they still have yours up. There is also the issue of cookies that they have left behind (not chocolate chip either - LOL). So, if they decide to go back to your site, you still may get the sale because of the cookies.
This does not always happen, but it is common. I hope this helps you! :)

Yes, that helps. Thanks. :)
I didn't know it opened in another window. I guess it goes to show how much I actually notice and click on the Google ads. LOL

Great explanation of how to use Google Adsense and Google Adwords :) I apreciate it very much. If you are a newbie at marketing like myself you should use Google Adsense. Wait with Google Adwords. You can go broke if you use this wrong.

That's right MMM3! Once you are ready for the more advanced techniques, Google Adwords should be researched completely so that you know the full extent of how it works and how it can either benefit you or break you :)
