Is it better to run an ad in a busy city or one with fewer ads? A busy city will probably get more visitors, but your ad may be buried quickly since Craigslist always shows the most recent ad on top.

This can be true Andy. If you are able to list the ad with your keywords, it might also come up faster than then having to search the list. I also think it depends on the item you are selling. Is it in demand? If so, it is not going to matter where it is posted:)

I have sold items on Craigslist, and I can tell you that if the category is a busy one, it can get buried pretty quickly. The buyers can also be finnicky too. I don't know how many emails I got about my stuff for sale that never responded when I answered them. It wasn't until I was sitting right at my computer and answered an email as soon as I got it that I made the sale.

This is good to know Andy. I too have bought and sold through Craiglist. Its all about how quickly one answers their emails. If I did not get an answer within a day, they were not worth my time to pursue. Reason being, they were not serious enough to make a sell.:)

Good to get insight from people actually using Craigslist. Thanks for sharing! :)

I friend of mine recommends never using email when selling something on Craigslist. He posts his phone number, figuring if someone is serious, they'll call. He sold mainly electronic equipment, and his problem was that email senders were always wanting him to take stuff out the box and demonstrate that it worked before they'd be willing to buy. He told them it was brand new and they were free to take the receipt and swap it out if it did not work, but it was just a big h***le. Phone callers were more reasonable.

That is certainly another way of doing it! You will probably get more serious customers if they are willing to make a phone call. :)

One problem with that: I started geting text spam after posting my cell on Craigslist. I don't know for sure if they got the number from there, but I think that was the only place I publicly posted my cell number. If you don't have unlimited texting, it can be a pain. I tried to block them, but they were always from a different number or email address. My carrier told me that I would not be charged as long as I deleted them without opening them. They were always about the night life scene in Atlanta. I don't even live anywhere near Atlanta. LOL Now I have unlimited texts, so it's not a problem.

We have had that problem more so with the phone calls. They would ask all the questions, then want to meet up to look at, and if you did not come down on the price they wouldn't get it. We even list the pictures of the item. Very frustrating at times since you are selling an item that is 1/2 to 3/4 less than what it retails even used. We always make it a point that the price is firm, but they try anyways. lol :)

I think it may be time to change your phone number Andy - that would be extremely aggrevating and time consuming! :)

I am thankful that this has not happened to us. Are you able to change your number? Most carriers will do this for free and it helps to eliminate spam :)

Well, the number of text messages has come way down. If it was constant, I probably would have changed my number. The sender always had either "STAINLESS" or "MetroBoyz" in the address. Rather annoying.

I am sure it was. I guess we have been lucky in that way. I have also noticed with the emails in craigslist, you almost always get one of the emails where they want you to ship it across the states and that they will send you extra shipping costs. These are big scammers. We report these all the time. I guess this is just one of the downfalls you have to deal with when selling on their site :)
