If you are doing keyword search, it can be pretty tricky at times.
Here is a tool that can help.
http://www.semrush.com/
- Type the name of whatever you are promoting on your favorite
search engine.
- Click on the first result (the most popular and the one with the
most hits)
- Copy the URL of the site you are directed to.
- Past that URL at Semrush.com and presto...
Instant keywords your competitors are using and are being
successful with.
Hope this helps, best of luck.

Appreciate this. This was very helpful. I've used a couple of other keyword tools like overture wordtracker and Google. This should help further. Thanks

Question...How many keywords do you think should link to one product. Meaning if I am writing articles...how many keywords should I have for 1 product? I know the number is unlimited but what would you consider reasonable?

It all depends on how long your article, blog, website is (with content). The very general rule of thumb is to use your keyword or phrase every 100 - 150 words. You don't want to get accused of keyword stuffing or spamming.
Now Squidoo does only let you link to your product 9 times (which is quite a bit anyway). You have to check the terms of service for each submission site or blog format if you don't own it. If you don't want to have that issue you can set up a blog and buy a domain with hosting and you don't have to worry.
You can use another free source to check your word count - http://www.wordcounttool.com/.
With article submission sites especially. Make sure you check the terms for those. :)

If you have quite a few targeted keywords, you can use these keywords to write more articles with, build a blog or lens with them. You want to use as many as you can to get the traffic back to your main sites:)

Having members come in share is such a great way to gain knowledge in all aspects of marketing. So much information to learn and dibble dabbling in small areas at a time helps us to learn what may work for us and what may not:)

Hi all, I am a newbie here and have tried to use Market Samurai to do keyword research. Purchased the product but don't have much luck with keywords. Anybody know this product or used it. Is it worth it?

I find the whole topic of keywords somewhat confusing.
How does one make a list of targetted keywords for My Online Income System?
Anybody?

Although those are highly competitive words, this will help you get on the right track. You want to drill down the words even more if you can. Here are some examples:
Make Money Online (way to broad)
Make Money Online From Home
Make Money Online From Home Fast
How to Make Money Online From Home Fast (Much better!)
Although these are examples with high competition, you can get the idea.
Here is another:
Gardening Tips
Gardening Tips for a Rooftop
Gardening Tips for a Rooftop with part sun and part shade
You want to put in what people are actually typing into google or the other search engines. This is going to be your keyword phrase. Phrases are much better than just one word.
Use the google keyword tool for more suggestions. Or even when you start typing your phrase into google you may even get some examples as you are typing - this is also what others are already typing in. If you are using the Google Keyword Tool, it will have other suggestions in there too. There are many keyword tools out there which some suggestions can also be found within this forum.
Now as far as checking your competition - you will enter it in without quotes. This will give you a BROAD match. The number is going to usually be very high. Now when you are through with this, put that same phrase into the search engine with quotes around it.
"Make Money Online"
This will give you an EXACT match or your exact competition. This is going to show you how many competing pages you will have to "compete" with.
I usually use between 1000 and 3000. Your articles, lenses, websites, etc will have fresh content and have a better chance of getting into the top ranks of the search engine for those keywords.
Let us know if you have further questions about this. :)

Keywords can be quite confusing but very important in dealing with internet marketing. Ask as many questions as you can to understand this technique:)

hats off once again to the moderators for providing more great ideas for us newbies.
i too am starting to target "keyword phrases" with between 1000-4500(ABSOLUTE MAX!) results on google.
anymore than 4500 and the competition gets quite difficult. i think eventually i will drop to 3000 like mod 1

You can go a little higher but I like to stay within that range typically. Especially when choosing a domain. :)

If using the same niche, you can also use the lower ones first then once you are more established, reach a little higher in keywords as in the ranges between 4000-5000. A lot of times you will see your rankings bump up for you have become more reputable:)
daymo
04-26-2010, 11:11 PM
when you say more reputable
how much web content are you looking at in order to be regarded as reputable?
are we talking hundreds of articles and blog postings or is it possible to become reputable in less time than that?
Moderator 1
04-26-2010, 11:54 PM
Essentially to become reputable you are wanting to create a brand or brand yourself. As you get your name or your "brand" out there, with articles, lenses, blogs, websites, even forums, people are getting to know you and trust you. You want to build the trust and you will have followers who will want to get their information from you because you have become a trusted source. This creates a great business foundation, sales, and of course a loyal following! :)

The more you put yourself out there the faster you climb up the ranks. As Mod1 mentioned with the above techniques, you will be out there before you know it :)

This forum is great, and you guys offer so much information to us newbies. One thing I have found out with Market Samurai is that it gives you a lot of infomation as to the money earned from the keyword an more importantly your competition, searches per day and the % relevance it has. Thanks to your guys insite I am beginning to understand how all this keyword research works. I purchased the product while doing the #30 Day Challenge but didn't quite understand how it all fitted together. There is light at the end of the tunnel now...

I have not visited the 30 day challenge in quite a while. I am sure they have added quite a bit of new techniques in regards to social bookmarking networking. Its actually a great learning curve to add to your knowledge base.
I am happy to hear that the keywords are starting to make sense. Sometimes it takes awhile. Just keeping asking questions:)
