Free traffic exchanges sound good. I would be curious to know if they're worth the time investment. I can't seem to justify the time commitment necessary for traffic exchanges.
I'd love some feedback regarding others' experiences though...

You have to really be careful with traffic exchanges. They can be very beneficial, but there are a lot out there that are not sending relevant traffic. People are searching for something specific such as a gardening site and instead they get to a site about cosmetics or something. It is irritating to the person searching for gardening tips.
Just make sure you research the site and see what others are saying, whether you pay for the traffic exchange or not.

This is where you want to research them first. There are some great ones out there, but as MOD1 mentioned, you get some of them that are not as they say

Does anybody know what are good numbers to shoot for regarding how many people click on your link and how many buy the product? For instance, I have an article where 52% of 61 readers clicked on my link and so far only 1 person has purchased. Is this average, good, or bad?

One of the statistics out there that has been tested is that visitors will visit either that site or that product 7 to 12 times before they actually purchase the product. These numbers could change at any time obviously.
